The fabric used for this overlay is the Ikat, which has a great story behind it.  The earliest visual reference to it comes from the murals of the famous Ajanta caves of central India, dating back 1200 – 1600 years.

The Ikat is unique weave and takes a lot of effort to make. In this,  threads of the warp or weft are patiently tied and then dyed multiple times, to acquire different patterns. Sometimes both are tied and dyed creating the double Ikat.
